I’ve had the benefit of working with Ross from Care Source in my previous organisation and again in my current role. Ross was recommended to me when we were looking at an organisational restructure – there was significant work that needed to be done across all parts of the business.

During that time, Ross helped with the conceptual components of the restructure, the redesign for the business, acting as a good sounding board and assisting in the recruitment of key organisational roles.

We were on the look-out for an assessment tool that we could use in our recruitment process. As is the case with most service providers in the Care sector, due to the nature of our sector and the nature of frontline roles typically being a casual workforce, we experience high turnover of staff. So, we were looking at ways to manage this, add more value in our recruitment processes, and gain more insight into the personality and behavioural qualities of the staff that we were recruiting.

Ross Bell from Care Source had an assessment system that was tailored specifically to the Care sector and frontline roles. We were looking for something that would capture the attitudes of employees – as attitude is often more important than aptitude. Qualities such as empathy, resilience and a customer focus are very important in the Care sector. Care Advantage provided by Care Source appeared to offer a solution.

Integrated Living started with a 30-day trial of Care Advantage before making the decision to take it on board permanently. I’ve used a range of behavioural and psychometric assessment tools in my previous employment, however these had been used in the later stages of the recruitment process, and typically for more senior level employees. Care Advantage turns this on its head.

I was sceptical about using this type of screening for frontline staff as we weren’t convinced that applicants would be willing to undertake the assessment. We thought that the initial 15-minute assessment would be a deterrent, however we were surprised at the results! We actually have strong completion rates.

We use Care Advantage at the top of our recruitment funnel for all roles – including frontline and office-based staff, case managers, team leaders – before we even screen an applicant’s resume. Completing the assessment is just one indicator that these applicants are serious about and respect our employment process. I guess if they weren’t willing to complete the assessment, it could raise questions about their commitment to us as an employer and their role within our organisation.

In comparison to other systems I’ve used, Care Advantage is simple to use. There are some minor tweaks from an internal system perspective which could be improved, and these are being worked on. Through the system, we’ve been able to create benchmarks of our ideal applicants, saving time in the process. Also due to everything going through the online system, it has eliminated the need for manual data entry.

In addition to using Care Advantage as a pre-screening tool for recruitment, we’re also using the system during the appraisal process – to measure and manage employee engagement. We’re seeing good results in this area as well, as it assists the team leaders in providing feedback and managing employee performance.

Since using Care Advantage, we’ve seen an increase in the quality of candidates we are employing. We are identifying employees who are more suited to work in the Care sector – displaying the attitude and qualities we deem important for the nature of our business.

I’ve had an association with Care Source through a previous role and was aware of their reputation within the Aged Care industry. I understand they are well-respected.

This senior recruitment was the first time I used Care Source in my current role. Initially, they spent considerable time on the phone with me to thoroughly understand our business, the role, the working environment, the organisation culture and specific skills and experience considerations we were looking for in a candidate.

When I was appointed as Chair of RSL Care I was relatively new to the aged care sector. I wanted to make some changes to the organisation, so I met with Ross to discuss the talent that was in the market and what we needed to do to turn RSL Care into a more commercial outfit than what it currently was.

Ross understood from our discussions where I felt the organisation was lacking and where we needed to take it, and, where the sector needed to go for that matter. He gave me strategic insight and gave me confidence that I knew what I needed to do.

We weren’t really successful in getting high level appointments into our business so our Chairman, who had a long working relationship of more than 20 years with Ross Bell, suggested I give Ross a call.

We were looking for a Marketing Manager at that stage. We needed a new role, and we needed to go outside of our industry, so I had a chat to Ross. We went through a couple of scenarios and at the end of the day we made an appointment and they are still with us to this day.

I think the reason why we went back to make another appointment later on with Care Source was because Ross and his team provided a lot of certainty about the candidates that were presented. It cut away a whole lot of stress about finding the person yourself. There was a lot of discussion about what that person needed to have – not just from a technical perspective, but a cultural perspective as well.

Ross spent a significant amount of time in the business – taking the time to understand our business and where we were at; to understand what we actually needed to achieve in that role, and to understand the other people in high level roles within the business.

That’s the value that he brings to our business. We’re not in the aged care sector but that didn’t matter because it was about trying to find the right person for the right role.

The biggest thing that is different about Care Source, is the time that they take to understand the business’ personality, how we run our business, and ensure we find the right person. I’ve worked with other recruiters, but they don’t take the time to understand myself, firstly, and the broader team. What’s also important is the space in which we operate and where we are in the business cycle. Ross took the time and effort to understand that. That’s the difference that I felt with Care Source, over and above anybody else.

We use Ross for key roles within the business and one of the things that is good about Ross is that when he provides candidates, he has already screened them thoroughly. By the time he puts someone in front of you, he knows the person quite well, and that is really important. He shortlists the applicants, without the bombardment.
